The piece

American Weekend is one of those domestic knitwear labels that operated quietly for years, producing exactly the kind of sweater that ends up in the back of a closet for two decades and comes out looking better than the day it was bought. This one is a crewneck, size Large, knitted construction, cream colorway with a basketweave pattern that reads as sculptural rather than flat from more than two feet away. The kind of piece you pick up off a rack and immediately feel the difference in your hands.

American Weekend sat in the mid-range domestic market during the years when American knitwear production was still viable, before offshore manufacturing gutted the category through the late 1980s and into the 1990s. Basketweave construction like this requires real tooling investment. The interlocking stitch geometry creates actual raised relief across the chest and sleeves, something a standard flat-knit jersey can't replicate no matter the weight. Domestically produced sweaters from this period typically feature ribbed trim at the cuff, hem, and collar that holds its shape differently than ribbed trim on later imports. The gauge tends to be tighter, the hand softer after years of washing, and the overall silhouette roomier than contemporary sizing charts would suggest. A tagged Large from this period often wears like a relaxed modern XL depending on the wearer's frame. That oversized proportion is part of the appeal here, not a flaw.

Basketweave knit that builds real depth, broken in over decades, not seasons.

The copy in front of us shows the kind of softness that only comes from actual use and washing over time. Not pill-heavy distressing, not that artificial broken-in texture you see on reproductions. The cream holds without going yellow or grey. The basketweave pattern should read clearly across the chest with no significant felting or compression in the raised sections. The ribbed cuff at each sleeve end is where age usually tells first on sweaters like this. Check the cuff rib for any fraying at the fold line or thinning at the cuff edge before committing.

OWNER VERIFY: confirm production era from the American Weekend label construction and any country-of-origin tag present on the piece.

APPAREL ARCHIVE

The Apparel Rack

The 90s rack is where most of the shop's apparel lives. Team tees, tour shirts, promotional jackets, wrestling pullovers, movie tie-in prints that nobody saved on purpose. vintage production runs were large and the survivors are the ones that dodged the rag bin. Each garment is measured flat, photographed on a neutral ground, and listed against the tag size.
