Starter's 90s windbreaker program was the brand's quiet workhorse alongside the louder Pro Line parka runs, and this XL jacket is a clean example of why that line held up. The kind of Starter piece that was always sharper in person than the loud stuff got credit for.
Starter was printing money in the early-to-mid 90s. The Pro Line parkas were everywhere, sideline to sidewalk, NBA and NFL and MLB teams all in the rotation. But the non-team windbreaker line ran parallel, built for buyers who wanted the Starter name and construction without the allegiance. The nylon pull-through zip construction on jackets like this one was consistent across the catalog from roughly 1990 through 1995, before the brand started licensing into more mall-friendly silhouettes ahead of their late-decade financial trouble. Starter filed for bankruptcy in 1999, and Iconix Brand Group eventually picked up the name. What you see on shelves today is a different operation entirely. A jacket from the original Starter run, pre-bankruptcy, is a different thing from the reissues.

Zippered side pockets function. Elastic cuffs retain snap. The two-tone colorway reads modern enough to wear as an everyday layer right now, which is not something you can say about most of the louder team-mark Starter pieces from the same years. Size XL cuts generous through the chest by current standards, closer to a contemporary XXL in a relaxed fit. Pull the jacket flat and check the cuff elastic for any slack or roll before you commit, because the elastic band is the first place this construction shows its age.
